Hip hop & R&B wedding songs that actually fill the floor
Most lists of hip hop wedding songs are written by people who have never had to fill a dance floor at 1am with three generations on it. This one is written from the booth. I'm DJ Zas, a Seville-based DJ and turntablist, and soul, funk, R&B and hip hop are what I've played for 20 years. Here are the songs that work, moment by moment, and why.
Before the list: three rules from the booth
- Clean versions exist for a reason. If grandparents and children are in the room, play radio edits. Same energy, no awkward faces.
- Familiarity beats credibility. The deep cut you love will empty the floor if nobody knows it. Save it for the drinks reception, where it shines.
- Use the bridges. Hip hop and R&B are built on soul, funk and disco, because that's where the samples came from. A parent who knows Chic's "Good Times" will dance to "Rapper's Delight".
Walking down the aisle
For the ceremony you want warmth, a clear structure and no surprise lyrics. R&B ballads and soul classics work beautifully, as originals or instrumental versions.
| Song | Artist | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Ribbon in the Sky | Stevie Wonder | A gentle soul standard with an unmistakable melody. Friends and grandparents both recognise it. |
| At Last | Etta James | Lush strings, a slow pace and a title that says everything. |
| Spend My Life with You | Eric Benét feat. Tamia | A duet that is, quite literally, a vow. |
| Best Part | Daniel Caesar feat. H.E.R. | Soft guitar and two voices. Intimate without feeling slow. |
| Adorn | Miguel | Modern R&B devotion, smooth from the first bar. |
| Halo | Beyoncé | It builds to a huge chorus. Time it so the chorus lands as you reach the front. |
The exit
You're married. The music should change gear the second you turn around.
| Song | Artist | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours | Stevie Wonder | The title is the announcement. Instant smiles, instant clapping. |
| Crazy in Love | Beyoncé feat. Jay-Z | That horn riff, lifted from The Chi-Lites, is a fanfare. Nobody walks slowly to it. |
| Golden | Jill Scott | Joyful neo soul about living life your way. Made for confetti. |
| Lovely Day | Bill Withers | Warm and universal. Every age group knows it. |
Drinks reception: neo soul and golden-era hip hop
In Spain the drinks reception, the cóctel, is long and the food keeps coming, so it deserves a proper set. This is where I play the records I love most, often on vinyl: mid-tempo, warm and conversational.
| Song | Artist | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Electric Relaxation | A Tribe Called Quest | Built on Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Brew". Jazzy, relaxed, instantly classy. |
| Eye Know | De La Soul | A Steely Dan sample and Otis Redding's whistle: a love song in a hip hop jacket. |
| The Light | Common | One of hip hop's finest love songs, over a Bobby Caldwell sample. |
| Brown Sugar | D'Angelo | A smoky, slow groove. The sound of neo soul arriving. |
| On & On | Erykah Badu | Hypnotic and elegant. It sits under conversation without disappearing. |
| Get By | Talib Kweli | Nina Simone's "Sinnerman" piano lifts the energy as the reception winds down. |
A personal note: in 2009 I shared a festival bill in Seville with De La Soul, DJ Muggs and Mix Master Mike. My own records and collaborations are on my discography page (in Spanish).
The grand entrance
Spanish couples often make a big entrance into dinner, and British and American couples into the reception. Pick something with a recognisable first five seconds.
| Song | Artist | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Public Service Announcement | Jay-Z | "Allow me to re-introduce myself." No better opening line for an entrance. |
| All I Do Is Win | DJ Khaled feat. T-Pain, Ludacris, Rick Ross & Snoop Dogg | Hands in the air from the first bar. Expect napkins to be waved. |
| Jump Around | House of Pain | That squeal is a starting gun. Perfect for a bridal party with energy. |
| Hypnotize | The Notorious B.I.G. | Built on Herb Alpert's "Rise": smooth, swaggering, recognisable in a second. |
| This Is How We Do It | Montell Jordan | Feel-good 90s swing. Parents dance to it too. |
| Love on Top | Beyoncé | Pure joy, and the key changes at the end are made for a big reveal. |
First dance
Three questions: do you want to slow dance, show off or switch? A mid-song switch from a ballad into something uptempo is easy to edit and great fun to reveal.
| Song | Artist | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Let's Stay Together | Al Green | Timeless and danceable at a gentle pace. Ideal if you don't want to "perform". |
| Nothing Even Matters | Lauryn Hill feat. D'Angelo | Two defining voices of 90s soul in a quiet, deeply romantic duet. |
| Leave the Door Open | Silk Sonic | Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak channelling 70s soul. Recognised within seconds. |
| Boo'd Up | Ella Mai | Sweet, playful and easy to dance to. |
| So in Love | Jill Scott feat. Anthony Hamilton | A grown-up love duet with a steady, comfortable tempo. |
| I'll Be There for You/You're All I Need to Get By | Method Man feat. Mary J. Blige | Hip hop and soul in one: the Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell classic, reworked. |
| By Your Side | Sade | Slow, steady and very elegant. |
Opening the dance floor
Right after the first dance, you have about one song to convince everyone to stay. Start with crossover: songs that grandparents and twenty-somethings both know.
| Song | Artist | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| September | Earth, Wind & Fire | The universal opener. Joy from the first guitar lick. |
| Ain't Nobody | Rufus & Chaka Khan | A synth bassline that lands with every age group. |
| Rapper's Delight | The Sugarhill Gang | It rides Chic's "Good Times" bassline: the perfect bridge from disco to hip hop. |
| Whatta Man | Salt-N-Pepa feat. En Vogue | A toast to your partner, in song form. |
| Hey Ya! | OutKast | Everyone knows the Polaroid line. Everyone. |
| Uptown Funk | Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars | The modern funk crossover nobody needs introducing to. |
| Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) | Beyoncé | A natural cue for the bouquet, and the choreography still comes out. |
Peak time: 90s and 2000s R&B and hip hop
This is the heart of the night for couples who grew up with these records. Mix it tight and keep the hooks coming.
| Song | Artist | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Yeah! | Usher feat. Lil Jon & Ludacris | A peak-time chant. Lil Jon does the hype for me. |
| No Diggity | Blackstreet feat. Dr. Dre & Queen Pen | That piano, from Bill Withers' "Grandma's Hands", and a hook the whole room sings. |
| Family Affair | Mary J. Blige | Dr. Dre's production and a chorus that orders people to dance. |
| Juicy | The Notorious B.I.G. | Mtume's "Juicy Fruit" underneath. Watch who knows every word. |
| Say My Name | Destiny's Child | A shout-along chorus. A whole table will take it over. |
| California Love | 2Pac feat. Dr. Dre & Roger Troutman | Talk box, party piano, sunshine. It fits Andalusia perfectly. |
| It Takes Two | Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock | Lyn Collins' "Think" break at a faster tempo. The room goes up a gear. |
| Nice for What | Drake | A Lauryn Hill sample over a bounce rhythm. A neat bridge into faster territory. |
| Essence | Wizkid feat. Tems | Afrobeats with an R&B soul. It lifts the room without breaking the mood. |
For British crowds: UK R&B and garage
If most of your guests grew up in the UK, a short run of home-grown R&B and garage hits harder than any American classic.
| Song | Artist | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Back to Life (However Do You Want Me) | Soul II Soul feat. Caron Wheeler | The a cappella opening is a call to the floor. That groove still sounds modern. |
| Return of the Mack | Mark Morrison | A 90s British R&B anthem. Instant singalong. |
| Re-Rewind (The Crowd Say Bo Selecta) | Artful Dodger feat. Craig David | Garage nostalgia in its purest form. |
| Fill Me In | Craig David | Two-step rhythm, R&B vocal and a chorus nobody has forgotten. |
The last song
The last song is what people remember on the way out. Make it a singalong or make it yours.
| Song | Artist | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Ain't No Mountain High Enough | Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell | Arms around shoulders, everyone singing. A perfect ending. |
| Before I Let Go | Maze feat. Frankie Beverly | A cookout and wedding staple for many American families. Nobody sits it out. |
| Killing Me Softly | Fugees | A slow, collective singalong when the night winds down. |
| Forever My Lady | Jodeci | A slow jam for couples who want the last dance to be theirs. |
Getting married in Spain? Add a Spanish twist
If your wedding is in Spain, one or two crossover moments go a long way. Rosalía's "Malamente" mixes flamenco with modern production and sits comfortably next to R&B. A rumba such as "Me quedo contigo" by Los Chunguitos gets Spanish relatives singing, and the handclaps are easy for everyone else to join. I explain how I mix these moments into soul and hip hop on my wedding DJ in Spain page.
Frequently asked questions
Can a hip hop wedding work with older guests?
Yes, if it's built properly. Start from the soul, funk and disco records that hip hop sampled, play clean versions, and save the harder tracks for later in the night, when the floor is already yours.
Should we give the DJ a full playlist?
Better not. Give your key moments, ten to twenty must-plays and a do-not-play list. Then let the DJ read the room. A fixed playlist can't react to who is actually dancing.
Do you play explicit versions?
Only if you ask me to. By default I play radio edits whenever children or older relatives are around.
Is your date still free?
I take one or two weddings a month, so I can prepare each one properly, well in advance. Tell me when and where, and I will reply personally with availability.
